Let’s play: books that inspired video games

You may think that viewing a television or movie adaptation is the only way to visually enjoy your favorite thriller. Of course, you do have the power of you own imagination to rely on too, but many people feel that the immersive of experience of going to watch a movie based on a thrilling book, is hard to beat.

However, there has been a trend in recent years for a number of popular book series to find their way onto video game platforms. Given that many movies have already been made into video game versions, it’s probably logical that many books which are crammed with action and thrills would make for good gaming material.

Perhaps one advantage a video game adaptation has over a movie is that it can remain more faithful to the details of the plot and characters as it doesn’t necessarily have to cram everything into a neat two-hour slot.

Here are some video games which have found their origins in books:

The Witcher

Anyone who has played The Witcher series of games will have no doubt enjoyed the action fantasy content. It was one of those immersive games which brings you to a whole new world. That world was actually created by Andrzej Sapkowski who is the Polish author of The Witch series of novels. The game isn’t overly strict on the plot and allows players to decide what happens to each character rather than having their destiny mapped out for them.

Assassin’s Creed

This series of games has enjoyed phenomenal success but the original game was inspired by a novel according to its creator. Jade Raymond revealed a few years ago that Assassin’s Creed was loosely based on the novel Alamut by Vladimir Bartol which was first published in 1938 and revolves around a Persian fortress.
